where’s the beef

Many people know that I am an advocate for cutting back on animal products. Not necessarily cutting them out entirely, but rather reducing consumption of meat and dairy and increasing consumption of vegetables, whole grains, and vegetarian sources protein.

I believe in this for 2 reasons: it will inherently reduce calorie and saturated fat intake and it is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint. Until now, I hadn’t been able to find the right information to support the latter claim but at when I was at the Global Kitchen Exhibit I read the below facts:

  • It takes 29 calories of feed to produce 1 calorie of beef
  • It takes 20 times more water to produce beef than cereal grains
  • 35% of all crops are used for animal feed

Just some food for thought.
